You’ve known Harrison Ford in a million different roles: Rogue interstellar mercenary, replicant hunter, the tough-guy President on an airplane, and even an innocent man convicted of murder. But maybe his most famous role is that of whip-wielding, snake-hating, Nazi-punching archaeologist Henry “Indiana” Jones Junior, an adventurer who saves the dame AND the precious artifact in every installment of the series.
But there’s one thing that Harrison Ford likes saving more than idols, amulets, religious artifacts, and crystal skulls, and that’s the planet. He’s been involved for almost three decades with a non-profit called Conservation International, a group whose mission is to literally save the world.
Ford was in LA with Conservation International on Thursday night to receive an award the group was giving him for his years and years of service, and the speech that he gave while accepting it was one of the most poignant and well-phrased indictments of the current administration I can possibly imagine.
As he was handed the Founder’s Award, Ford told the crowd,
“We face an unprecedented moment in this country. Today’s greatest threat is not climate change, not pollution, not flood or fire. It’s that we’ve got people in charge of important shit who don’t believe in science.“
That’s essentially everything you need to know about the Trump administration in one simple, albeit vulgar, sentence.
A favorite tactic of Republicans is to campaign on the notion that government is terrible for you, that it’s a bunch of bureaucrats essentially getting in your way — and then when they’re elected, they go ahead and prove it.
Much like the Congress and Cabinet of the president who recently called Trump a “blowhard,” George W. Bush, all of the people whispering in Trump’s ears are telling him to appoint people who are the polar opposite of what would normally be required of someone to do the job that he’s appointing them for. The highest levels of government concerned with the effects of climate change right now simply don’t “believe” in it, as though it’s a dragon.
Climate change isn’t a mythical creature, though. It doesn’t care what’s fair or right, it doesn’t stop, and it will systematically eradicate anything in its path… Like a Nazi.
Time to start punching.
