In a stunning about-face, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones now says that if any of his players refuse to stand during the playing of the national anthem, he will make sure they don’t play.
The new hardline stance by Jones is in stark contrast to what took place prior to a Cowboys game on September 25, when this tweet was posted on the team’s official Twitter page:

Now, however, Jones is insisting that he will not tolerate any protests prior to games featuring his team:
“I know this, we cannot … in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag. We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we’re clear.”
The comments from Jones came just hours after Vice President Mike Pence walked out of an NFL game being played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis when several players took a knee to demonstrate the disparate treatment of African-Americans by law enforcement. Pence’s walkout wound up costing taxpayers at least $250,000 in transportation and security expenses.
After Pence left the venue, he tweeted out:
I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.

Now it appears Jerry Jones is reading from the same playbook as Pence and Trump. He leveled this threat after his team lost to the Green Bay Packers Sunday evening:
“There is no room here if it comes between looking non-supportive of our players and of each other or creating the impression that you’re disrespecting the flag, we will be non-supportive of each other. We will not disrespect the flag.
But if there’s anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play. OK? Understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period.”
Considering that the Cowboys have a record of 2-3 and are in third place in the NFC East, their not playing might actually be a blessing.
