Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday during a question and answer session at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, mocked Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for being a prisoner of war.
John McCain spent 5 1/2 years in captivity during the Vietnam War, while Trump avoided the military altogether by receiving a series of deferments.
“He was a war hero because he was captured,” Trump told host Frank Luntz during the 2015 Family Leadership Summit, according to The Hill. “I like people who weren’t captured.”
Trump’s biting remark came after Luntz challenged Trump over his criticism of McCain’s political career.
Luntz then questioned Trump’s attack given that McCain is a “war hero.”
“I supported McCain for president,” Trump said of McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign against Barack Obama.
“He lost and let us down,” Trump said, adding that he had spent $1 million on McCain’s Presidential bid.
“I’ve never liked him as much after that,” he added. “I don’t like losers.”
“I’m so proud of the fact I got a dialogue started on illegal immigration,” he said. “I’m very happy.”
“I took a lot of abuse,” Trump said of the backlash “It turned out I was right.”

Trump’s recent remarks disparaging Mexicans has taken a lot of heat but he hasn’t backed down because when the hotel magnate is in a hole, he just keeps digging
“They’re sending people who have a lot of problems,” Trump said during the address at Trump Tower in New York City.
“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” he added. “And some, I assume, are good people.”
It will be interesting to see how many ‘patriots’ who support Trump will ignore or support his attack on McCain’s nearly 6 years in captivity during the Vietnam war.
There were 1,350 Americans listed as prisoners of war or missing in action during that time, all of whom Trump just disparaged for their military service. McCain was tortured during his time in captivity.
Meanwhile, Trump said during a recent speech that ‘we have to take care of our Veterans.”
