According to Fox Business host Lou Dobbs, former President Barack Obama should be hauled in by United States Marshals and charged with treason under some unwritten law that he shouldn’t be allowed to offer anything that might be taken as criticism of the sitting president. The offense? Obama gave current cheeto-faced presidential impersonator Donald Trump a bit of friendly advice:
Think before you speak, think before you tweet.
Publisher Steve Forbes, commenting on the remark, thinks that Obama “Doesn’t matter anymore.” Then Dobbs sputtered:
I think U.S. Marshals should follow him, and any time he wants to go follow the President like he is, and behave…
Dobbs was speaking with Forbes, on the current tax reform legislation, although they spent over half of the 4+ minute segment discussing Obama’s remarks. Dobbs declared that Obama was exhibiting “bad manners” and then added:
It’s boorish and it’s absurd and he doesn’t realize how foolish he looks. I mean, he should be brought back by the Marshals. Isn’t there some law that says presidents shouldn’t be attacking sitting presidents?
The astounded Forbes, openly laughing, answered, “There’s an unwritten one. Sort of a Logan Act for ex-presidents, but it is unenforceable.” What Forbes was referring to is the courtesy a former president offers a sitting president — to keep criticism of their decisions, policies, and general running of the country to positive remarks.
There is no law that Obama cannot offer an opinion on Trump’s presidency. And there is certainly no law on the offering of friendly advice. To think that a former president should just sit down and shut his mouth when the current president is on a ruinous path for the country is absurd. All five former presidents should be pointing fingers at Trump and hollering from the rooftops, “You’re doing it WRONG!”
Perhaps Dobbs should apply his criticism to himself and Trump, as it would seem more applicable to them, “It’s boorish and it’s absurd and he doesn’t realize how foolish he looks.” Dobbs and Trump have both made boorish, absurd comments and neither has any clue how foolish they appear to people with real brains.
