House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La), 49, who ascended to the House GOP’s third-ranking post this year, is in a lot of hot water after it was revealed that he was a speaker at a convention for White Supremacists in 2002.
Scalise has countered that he was a featured speaker at a white supremacist event, which was founded by former KKK leader David Duke.
In fairness, haven’t we all innocently stumbled into KKK-type meetings? We’re always all, “How the hell did I get here?”
The Times Picayune reports:
According to announcements of the 2002 event posted in a white supremacist website, the event in May 2002 at the Landmark Hotel in Metairie was a “workshop on civil rights and heritage related activism” for white nationalists groups. It listed Duke as EURO’s “national president,” indicating he would be speaking via video from another EURO event being held simultaneously in Italy.
There are a few politicians who have his back.
Steve King (R-Iowa) jumped to Scalise’s defense. “Jesus dined with tax collectors and sinners,” he said according to the Washington Post. “I know his heart, I’ve painted houses with him post-Katrina, and I know he is a good man.”
Governor Bobby Jindal (R-Exorcist) said in a statement, “I know Congressman Scalise to be a good man who is fair-minded and kindhearted. I’m confident he absolutely rejects racism in all its forms,” according to the Times-Picayune.
David Duke said the exact same thing.
U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, (D-New Orleans), the only Democrat in Louisiana’s U.S. House delegation, said, “I don’t think Steve Scalise has a racist bone in his body. Steve and I have worked on issues that benefit poor people, black people, white people, Jewish people. I know his character.” Richmond, by the way, is black.
It was just two years after speaking at the conference that Scalise voted to oppose making Martin Luther King Day a holiday.
In 1997, Scalise voted against a bill to prohibit hate crimes based on race, class or sexual orientation.
Steve King wins the quote of the day though. Jesus, a dark skinned socialist, who never attended hate group meetings, would have condoned this, because sinners.
