Republican donors are dumping their party in favor of Democrats and against Donald J. Trump. Just yesterday, billionaire retail boss and Republican party donor Les Wexner said he has renounced his membership of the party, and went on to praise former President Barack Obama. It’s not just Wexner, though. Another mega-donor has had it with his party and is now donating to Democrats.
Seth Klarman is urging voters to support Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections and in an interview, he said that “democracy is at stake.” This year, Klarman is giving $20 million to Democrats, according to the New York Times.
“One of the reasons I’m willing to come out of my shell and talk to you is because I think democracy is at stake,” Klarman said. “And maybe I’ll be able to convince some other people of that. And get them to support Democrats in 2018.”
Klarman told the paper that he has donated $4.9 million to nearly 150 candidates.
Klarman isn’t all talk, in fact, he has donated to Democrats such as Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy, Texas Senate candidate Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who is running against Ted Cruz, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).
Still yet, Klarman says, “I’m not a Democrat.”
“We need to turn the House and Senate as a check on Donald Trump and his runaway presidency,” Klarman said.
In the past, The mega-donor gifted Republicans with $2.9 million in the 2016 election cycle.
Klarman explained that he feels “betrayed” by “spineless” Republicans and added that they have been “profiles in cowardice.”
“If one looks at my past giving, one might think that several million, five or six million, might be a lot in a cycle,” Klarman said. However, he went on to say that he is “stretching far beyond what I usually do” in the current cycle.
“By the election, I think I’ll have spent between $18 and $20 million,” he said, making him one of the top donors for the Democratic party this year.
“People should be asking themselves: Why are we writing checks to these same people who are cowards?” he said.
His message to those people: “Please join me.”
More like this, please. Republicans are supporting a scandal-plagued president* who is openly obstructing justice. That makes them complicit.
