Trump Has Managed To P*ss Off Players In Three Major Professional Sports

In what has been a major toddler temper tantrum, President Donald Trump has managed to alienate players, team owners, and entire professional sports franchises with his racist bullshit. It started Friday during a stump speech in Alabama in support of Senate candidate Luther Strange. Speaking in what seemed like an off-message rant, Trump mentioned the National Football League (NFL) and specifically, player Colin Kaepernick.

He repeated his feelings about taking a knee in a pair of tweets Saturday afternoon:

Last year Kaepernick was the first player to “take a knee” during the national anthem in support of the Black Lives Matter movement as a protest to the gunning down of young black men by corrupt police officers. Kaepernick was with the San Francisco 49ers, but was released as a free agent and remains unsigned for this playing season. Since that first day, the “take a knee” movement has been growing.

Today, it tumbled from the back burner of obscurity and the actions of a few temperamental athletes making statements into the mainstream of political statements that will be remembered in history alongside such great events as Stonewall, Loving v. VA, and the legalization of gay marriage nationwide.

When Trump went on his tirade during that stump speech he opened the floodgates. All day long there have been reports of teams sending out press releases in support of Kaepernick and all the other athletes that have taken a knee over the past year.

And Trump has not contained his idiocy to just the game of football.

When the Golden State Warriors were invited to the White House to celebrate their league championship, star player Steph Curry hesitated. Trump went on the offensive and Twitter-attacked the team, revoking the invitation:

Point Guard Steph Curry has never been one to mince words. During an interview with USA Today on Friday, he made the following rather definitive statement:

That we don’t stand for basically what our President has – the things that he’s said and the things that he hasn’t said in the right times, that we won’t stand for it. And by acting and not going, hopefully that will inspire some change when it comes to what we tolerate in this country and what is accepted and what we turn a blind eye to. It’s not just the act of not going there. There are things you have to do on the back end to actually push that message into motion.

The Warriors are backing their star player and issued a press release basically telling Trump to go jump in a lake with his “great honor” for a championship team. Apparently they think that the greater honor is to stand up for civil rights and freedom of speech.

The one thing you should never do in America is mess with people’s sports teams. Whether it’s football, basketball, or baseball, major league sports are a large part of almost every American’s lifestyle. We all have our favorite sport and our favorite teams. In making the attacks against players and teams in both football and basketball, Trump has also brought out a lot of people that ordinarily stay quiet and don’t express political opinions or feelings.

But he hit them below the belt with his attacks today. And he pissed them off.

And now major league baseball will be joining the fray as well. For the first time tonight, at a Major League Baseball (MLB) game, a player took to his knee during the national anthem. Oakland Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell surprised fans, players and coaches when he gently dropped to one knee in solidarity with fellow athletes in two other sports. Notice his team mate’s hand on his shoulder in a silent affirmation of kinship.

Way to go Rookie!

Sports aren’t the only area affected by the solidarity bug. Famous musician Stevie Wonder dropped to his knees at the Global Citizen Fest.

Trump seems to have opened the proverbial “can of worms.” Much like the practical joke crepe paper and spring-loaded snake stuffed into a tin can — once that can is opened that snake NEVER goes back inside.

It’s almost hockey season.
