After yesterday’s shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon there are many questions about the motives behind why the shooter did what he did.

You can find plenty of pieces on those questions, I will not write a think piece on a murderer.

Today and every day I will focus on the heroes.

Yesterday a madman walked into a classroom where Chris Mintz was attending class and started shooting at his classmates.

Yesterday was his son’s sixth birthday.

Yesterday was the day Chris Mintz survived.

Thursday Morning around 10:30 local time an armed man walked into his classroom and Mintz charged straight at him to save his fellow classmates. Another hero in the room, a nurse, first tried to save another student before staying with Mintz until help arrived. She held his hand as he said over and over again that it was his son’s birthday. He has undergone at least one surgery as confirmed by his cousin Derek Bourgeois to The Daily Beast.

When told of Mintz’s heroism, cousin Derek Bourgeois said, “It sounds like something he would do.”

Bourgeois said he and Mintz had grown up together in a small town in North Carolina. After High School they joined the Army. Mintz was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington, Bourgeois at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Both were deployed overseas.

After leaving the army and moving to Oregon Mintz began working at the local YMCA and enrolled in classes at Umpqua to become a fitness trainer.

Mintz came home unharmed from the war – only to be shot in an American classroom saving the lives of his classmates. Bourgeois said none of Mintz’s vital organs were hit, but he will have a long recovery ahead of him. “From what I’m hearing, he’s fine,” his cousin said. “But he’s going to have to learn to walk again.”

There are two things we know for certain. Our politicians will do nothing in the face of constant death at the hands of gun violence in our country, and people kill others for the massive attention they receive. Don’t give it to them. Today let’s talk about Chris Mintz, and the nurse who has yet to be named, and the victim’s families who are mourning the loss of loved ones today. Let’s talk about politicians bought and paid for by special interest groups. Let’s talk about change.

But let’s never talk about him. He deserves nothing.
