Despite the fact that his background check for a security clearance had been flagged due to charges of domestic violence, former White House staff secretary Rob Porter was about to receive a promotion from Chief of Staff John Kelly before he was forced to resign.
CNN is reporting that Porter was in line to become Kelly’s right-hand man in the White House:
“He was also being considered for the deputy chief of staff position, another source familiar with the situation said. CNN reported Friday that Jim Carroll, who served as the deputy chief of staff for less than three months, was stepping down to helm the Office of National Drug Control Policy.”
Even more disturbing is the fact that other administration officials were also eager for Porter to get the promotion:
“Several White House officials, including chief of staff John Kelly, were receptive to promoting Porter. Kelly had told associates that Porter was one of the few competent professionals on his staff and wanted to ensure that he was being used to his full potential.
“Senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump also viewed Porter as a professional, competent staffer and worked to elevate his standing inside the West Wing, two sources familiar with the situation said.”
On Tuesday, during testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, FBI Director Christopher Wray poked holes in the White House’s assertion that the administration didn’t fire Porter sooner because his background check hadn’t yet been completed. Wray told the committee:
“The FBI submitted a partial report on the investigation in question in March and then a completed background investigation in late July.”
Despite not having cleared the background check, however, Porter was still given access to secret information even though a permanent security clearance had not yet been granted to him and as many as 40 other administration officials.
During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump said Hillary Clinton couldn’t be trusted with top secret information because she’d once had an email server at her house. Then Trump turned around and let a man who allegedly abused both of his ex-wives work in the Oval Office. No wonder the world is laughing at us.
