The lengthy list of white people calling the police on black people for no reason whatsoever just got longer. An Ohio man found out that saying racist shit can result in ruining his business, while another man lost his job after calling police on a woman who was couponing while black, the latter of which happened before earlier this month to another black woman. This time, a white staff member at Smith College in Massachusetts called the police on Oumou Kanoute while she was eating lunch on campus because she “seemed to be out of place.”
Kanoute, though, is a sophomore at Smith College and was working as a teaching assistant and a residential adviser on the campus during the summer, according to the Boston Globe.
Kanoute told of the incident on Facebook and explained that she taking a break on Tuesday when a police officer approached her to ask why she was on the campus.
“I did nothing wrong, I wasn’t making any noise or bothering anyone,” Kanoute wrote. “All I did was be black.”
“No student of color should have to explain why they belong at prestigious white institutions,” she continued. “I worked my hardest to get into Smith, and I deserve to feel safe on my campus.”
The college responded to say in a statement that the campus police who responded “found nothing suspicious” about the student’s presence on campus and added that it will conduct an investigation into the matter but also said that they will not release the name of the staff member who called the cops due to school policy.
Kanoute, however, wants the college to release the name of the individual the called the police.
“I demanded that the administration share the name of the person who made the 9-1-1 call so that they can confront and acknowledge the harm done to me as [a] student,” Kanoute said.
Dear Nervous White People, please stop calling the police on people of color just because you feel fragile around others. Better yet, just say home if you’re going to mess with people’s lives, kthxbye.
